Any place that can count St George the dragon-slayer, Lady Godiva, the poet Philip Larkin and jet pioneer Sir Frank Whittle as locals must have a story to tell. And Coventry’s story is like no other.
Coventry is world famous for:
Medieval power - evident in the striking beauty of buildings such as St Mary’s Guildhall, almshouses, timber-framed shops and pubs.
Manufacturing front-runner – cloth, ribbon, watches, bicycles and car ……. to name by a few.
The Cathedral – devastated, like so much of the City Centre, during the Blitz of November 1940. It was the building of a new Cathedral that gave Coventry its compelling post-war image as a centre for peace and reconciliation.
Innovation – Coventry’s pioneering, traffic-free shopping precinct, an integral part of the rebuilding of the City after the war, is evolving once again - in an equally exciting and imaginative way:
- Lower Precinct Redevelopment
A new glazed shopping mall and high street stores will turn the Lower Precinct into a top-notch shopping destination. The £38 million project will bring an enjoyable modern feel to city centre shopping.
- Phoenix Initiative
A stunning £40 million project revitalising a forgotten area of the city centre and unearthing the city’s history. Land between the Cathedral Quarter and the Museum of British Road Transport will be transformed with new public squares, housing, café-bars and gardens.
- Lighting Projects
The Council House is already lit to show off the impressive architecture to its full glory. Similar projects are planned for key buildings across the city centre, including Coventry’s famous three spires creating a fantastic night skyline.
- City Squares
Dynamic designs are on the table for Broadgate Square and the Council House Square. Modern and stylish, they will feature the latest in street furniture, quality lighting and public art – and they are certain to keep the city centre buzzing day and night.
- Unique Management of the City Centre
When Coventry City Council established the public/private sector partnership which was to become the City Centre Company, in 1997 the outside world watched with great interest. The City Centre Company aims to enhance the quality of life for all who live, work, shop or simply visit Coventry City Centre.
- City Centre Company
Coventry is a City which radiates dynamism, innovation and creativity from its centre, attracting in turn an inflow of commerce and visitors from many parts of the UK and overseas. The Company’s strategic vision is to create a city centre for today and the new millennium which is a prosperous, vibrant and enjoyable place to be.
